I wanted to begin with the 7 Day Free Version. Quickly, I discovered this is a very good app for creating instant frustration. I persevered and was eventually able to begin the trial period. If rating this app for its level of irritation, I would award it four stars. After only using it to identify three insects, I am to say, with all sincerity, I think they should pay people to use it instead of the other way around.

This app should not be categorized as free. There's not even a free trial. All you can do for free is scroll through their various bugs. To get an insect identified you have to subscribe & it is not cheap. I have no issues with pay apps if they're up front about it. It may very well be an amazing app, but I won't know as I am not comfortable subscribing or being tricked by deceptive companies.

The free version of this app used to work really well. Now, there are so many TikTok & game ads that whatever insect you were trying to identify has crawled away before the app camera opens. Today, I got stuck in a loop for several minutes where everytime I would click the camera, an ad would play, when the ad ended, same thing would happen again and again and again. The bug flew away and I finally just deleted the app from my phone while an ad was still playing. I'll find a different ID app.

Took a very clear picture of a beetle with a horizontal yellow stripe on its back. The app only showed basic black beetles with no markings. Frustrated, I took more pictures and tried again. Gave completely different results of green beetles. Tried again. Won't let me search again without purchasing a subscription. Why would I pay for crummy technology? The results were nothing like the pictures I took. Bad app.

The biggest issue is that the app doesn't really do its job well. It'll offer several options asking the user to select what they think it is. I get many insects are so similar you can't tell exact differences easily, but generally apps give a percentage of certainty rather than asking me to pick which is right. Most insects don't even have a description here or the common name. I end up having to do the same amount of research. Narrows the options only.
